Canadian Made DeckingĀ Guide

What is a deck? By definition, it’s a structure that connects your living space to the outdoors or it can be a place to make memories with your friends and family. Building a deck is about creating your ideal outdoor space and with so many decking choices it can be tough to know where to start. Let’s explore some great Canadian made options to help you find the perfect fit for your yard and budget.

Why Choose Canadian Decking?

Choosing Canadian decking has real advantages, like its proven ability to handle Canada’s climate. With hot summers and cold winters, your deck has to withstand the weather year-round.

We’ve chosen some of our favourite options below to leave you with a deck that lasts. An extra bonus, you’re supporting Canadian businesses and being kinder to the environment by choosing local options.

Top Canadian Decking Choices:

When choosing a material for a deck, you should think of these three categories: price, maintenance, and aesthetics. These categories can help you determine which lumber is the best for your deck build.

Cedar Decking

Western red cedar is a beautiful wood that naturally resists rot and insects. If you know us, you’ll know this is our favourite choice. While cedar prices did jump during the pandemic, they have now stabilized. Plus, all of our western red cedar is harvested and milled right here in Canada, so it’s not affected by any tariffs.

While cedar does need some annual maintenance and occasional re-staining, the beauty is unmatched and can’t be replicated with other options.

Pressure Treated (PT) Decking

If you’re looking for a cost-conscious wood decking option, PT is your best bet. The spruce, pine, and fir used for the decking is harvested in Canada and the pressure treating process also happens here, so it’s also not subjected to tariffs.

On the maintenance side, PT requires the same amount of maintenance as cedar including yearly cleaning. While PT decking will never match the look and beauty of cedar, it can be stained. We always recommend using Cutek on PT and cedar decks.

TruNorth Composite

This Canadian company makes strong and easy-to-care-for composite using recycled materials. Composite decking resists fading and stains and doesn’t require re-finishing. This can be a great option for someone who isn’t looking to do maintenance every year. However, this convenience comes with a higher price tag.

Clubhouse PVC

Another great Canadian option, PVC is known for being tough against the weather. Clubhouse’s special technology keeps their deck boards light without sacrificing strength or durability. Clubhouse comes in various colors and only needs an annual cleaning to stay in great shape. Similarly to composite, PVC has a higher initial cost than traditional lumber.
