5 DIY Cedar Projects to Finish in a Weekend

Western red cedar is the ultimate building material because it’s naturally resistant to rot and decay, dimensionally stable, and is a sustainable resource. Many people choose cedar for large projects like decks and siding, but it’s also a great choice for smaller DIY projects.

We’ve rounded up 5 DIY cedar projects from Real Cedar that can be finished in one weekend and don’t require much in the way of tools or prior building knowledge.

1. Modern Outdoor Chair

This low-to-the-ground western red cedar chair is stylish, easy to assemble and only requires 10 pieces of 8’ cedar lumber.

The legs were purposefully designed to be sturdy for use on decks and uneven surfaces like around the backyard fire pit.

Another advantage of this chair is the removable backrest, making it easy to transport to the cottage or store in the shed over the winter.

2. Patio Table (with Built-in Cooler) and Bench

This is an interesting and unique build that is a great long weekend project. The table features a built-in ice box to keep drinks cool during those hot summer days.

There’s a cedar inlay to cover the ice box when not in use. You could pair this table with chairs or build two benches (plans and shopping list included above).

3. Living Wall

Here’s a new take on planters — a living wall garden. Real Cedar designed this build to be customizable and adaptable to your needs.

You can add (or remove) planter boxes to fit your specific design and this conversation piece can be hung inside or outside.

4. Outdoor Cedar Sectional

An outdoor cedar sectional would definitely add some luxury to your outdoor space. This build is a bit more complicated but is still DIY friendly and can be completed in one weekend.

The couch was designed to use standard 24×24 cushions, and because cedar is so light, it’s easy to move around!

5. Entrance Trellis

Like the outdoor cedar sofa, this entrance trellis is on the more technical side of a DIY build, but if you’re up for a challenge, Real Cedar has done a great job of outlining the steps in the downloadable PDF.

The video also takes you through each step of the build so you can see how the cedar fits together. If you’re interested in this project, we recommend making it a family affair as an extra set (or two) of hands will help get this project off the ground.

If you’re planning on building one of these projects (or any other cedar project), remember to keep these tips in mind:

  • We recommend using 304 or 316 stainless steel, aluminum, or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners. Stay away from electroplated and zin-plated fasteners.
  • Cedar can be finished or left to naturally weather. Even without a finish, cedar will last a long time due to its natural rot resistant properties.
  • If you want to preserve the cedar colour, make sure to choose the right finish. A clear oil will not protect the wood from UV damage, you need a product like CUTEK with an added Colourtone.
