Forestry expert Greg Smith will share insights on sustainable practices, how they’re used today and what’s working. He’ll discuss the Canada–U.S. softwood lumber dispute, Canada’s export role and how the country is responding to unfair trade. The seminar will also look at partnerships with Indigenous communities and B.C.’s role in global forestry.

About Greg Smith
Greg Smith is the President of Gilbert Smith Forest Products Ltd. (GSFP), based in Barriere, British Columbia. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of British Columbia and is a Registered Professional Forester.Â
Greg is a dedicated leader in British Columbia’s forestry sector, known for developing innovative manufacturing and process solutions. Initially spending almost, a decade in forestry operations at GSFP, he later expanded his management expertise at Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing, working across business and product development. This blend of hands-on experience and strategic insight laid the foundation for his long-term leadership and the broader succession plan that brought him back to GSFP.Â
Greg has since successfully guided the company through economic downturns by developing new processes and markets. He is deeply involved in all aspects of the business and particularly enjoys capital projects, having led over $25 million in manufacturing upgrades over the past decade. His current focus is on strengthening both historic and new relationships essential to the company’s fibre security in a very dynamic landscape.Â
Greg serves as a director and has held the position of Chairman for both the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association and the Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau. He is also an alumnus of the Ivey Business School Quantum Shift program, a development program for Canada’s top entrepreneurial leaders.Â
He lives on a timbered acreage in Barriere with his wife, Maureen. They have three daughters and enjoy skiing, caring for their animals, and travelling.Â
